Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Terrains argileux humides, dans le Midi, le Centre et l'Est, jusque dans le Jura.
Répartition hors de France : Espagne et Italie septentrionales, Suisse, Tyrol.

A rather slender to stout perennial with smooth, flowering scapes 5-25 cm long, growing from an ascending to erect cluster of narrow leaves and a thick, branched rootstock.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is an abundant plant of salt marshes and wet places on the seashore and also rather common on mountains throughout most of the British Isles.

Fleurs : épi cylindrique, serré; bractées vertes, longuement acuminées, carénées, 4-5 fois plus longues que larges, dépassant le calice ; sépales obtus, à carène tranchante denticulée; corolle blanchâtre, à tube velu, à lobes acuminés, [anthères jaunes]

Flowers: 2-5 mm long, sessile, in a short, narrow, cylindrical spike which is much shorter than the terete peduncle; sepals ovate, hairy, 2 united and not winged; corolla pale green or brownish, lobes ovate, acute; stamens a little longer than the corolla tube; filaments yellow.
